An Eerie Snowfall

Here is a poem that I've penned. It came out of me without my really thinking on it. Afterward, I realized that it had a lot to do with the events of 9/11. Honestly, I didn't think of it at all when I wrote it. Only much later did I see any similarities in it. Whatever the case, I present it here as a post in my blog....

AN EERIE SNOWFALL

It's as if this material
composed of frozen water flakes
has any real purpose
but to chill the Earth

As if this planet
is not already a cold
forbidding place
to live

As if we don't already know
that this entire ball of clay
hurtles through a void
even colder and blacker than the night

As if we don't know
that we are fleshy creatures
decaying daily
like meat left on the counter

We are living to die
and dying in a deep
foreboding
loneliness

What is this life for
if not to be miserable in
If not to be embroiled
in a cauldron of suffering

Another eerie snowfall
teaches us lessons that we
already know
which is to live

live out this life
finish your span
do your damage
and then leave into the darkness

We are nothing but dust
even when alive and think otherwise

We are nothing but dust

Hobobob
