From the Library: Hymns
Isaac Watts, "the father of English hymnody," died on 25 November 1748. To mark this anniversary, today's program features hymns and sacred music. Styles range from choral early music to contemporary popular music and gospel. Among the artists you will hear are the Boston Camerata and Anonymous 4, both groups having a very polished sound. You will also hear the largely anonymous (and not polished) singers of the United Sacred Harp Musical Association Singing Convention in Fyffe, Alabama, recorded by Alan Lomax in 1959 and 1960. In order not to overwhelm listeners, the program will include at regular intervals meditative music on the flute by Riley Lee and on the hang by Laura Inserra.
