Relation- ships are what they are.
Minefields, difficult passes through rough lands and rocky parts on the shoulders of mountains. Relationships are rife with sheer cliffs and narrow ledges all sloping downwards to cause you to plummet to your death or unimaginable pain. How can one navigate such a difficult terrain? Is it fair to even try? I wonder myself as I lick wounds. Can you think of ways to harm yourself easier? Can you think of something more harsh to do to yourself than to let your heart out of your chest and place it out there to be harmed?
That's why so many people are not so daring, and would rather stay closed lipped about everything. Especially about how they feel, until it becomes maddening to watch. It reaches the point of ridiculous and you just hope one of them gets killed to end the suffering of watching them. Case in point, my most favorite show, Castle. About a mystery...well crime novelist who follows a female New York Detective on her cases to get ideas on his next story. Well, as the season progressed he falls for her and she falls for him. This Pas de Deux continues on and on and on with neither of them coming clean about their feelings. They meet others, date others, fuck others and yet these relationships do not work out because they are desperately in love with each other.
This is becoming tiring to watch. Then there is the 'Ooops! Our timing is off' plot between two lovers. This happens with Bones, another television show that's hard to watch. Last season, the hardboiled FBI agent, Booth and the female scientist, Brennan, both once again desperately in love with each other play this same game. But the FBI agent comes clean and confesses his love. She, on the other hand, turns him down because she doesn't think she's capable of loving him back. Women can be so fucking confusing that writers fall on this clearly sexist delusion to push a plot further than necessary. She is too confused to know her own mind on the matter. This guy is the handsomest man in the series. Even the walk in parts are not as handsome as he is. And yet, even though this is the most beautiful man in the world, she can't make up her lonely assed mind. At the close of the season, he goes off to fight the war in Iraq and she goes to some Sub-continent shithole to do volunteer work for an entire year.
Oh, but wait! It' gets better! The very next season, she has an epiphany and goes to him, AFTER he is engaged to another woman and is making this relationship work and what does she do? CONFESSES HER LOVE FOR HIM! Oooops! Our timing is off! Of course he tells her that he is already with someone, as if she doesn't know herself. What this does is set up the hijinks for the next season. Oh, I just can't wait. NOT!
Now there are many other variations of the same theme, with relationships going back and forth. I would like to see a healthy one strive and survive for once on television to give the impression that sometimes this shit does work out, because there isn't much hope in real life to be honest. Relationships in real life are not as durable as one might imagine. They break down, they fail because we are all human and we all have our frailties and faults. And in this selfish world, it's easy to think about oneself than others. Our own personal happiness takes precedence over our actions. What the fuck is that about? Don't people read the big picture anymore, or do they diddle around the bush or get their timing screwed up with love and relationships?
Is life imitating art? Or is Art imitating life? It's really hard to tell. The only thing that we can tell, for most of us, in and out of relationships, is that many of us are still alone.
