The Indestructible Beat of South Africa - Monday Night World Music
It was my good fortune and great pleasure to see the legendary Hugh Masekela in concert this past weekend. In honor of this magnificent musician and performer, tonight's Monday Night World Music features the music that influenced him and that he influenced in his turn - the indestructible beat of South African music.
From township swing jazz to township jive, from choral sounds to Soweto hip-hop, rock-pop, jazz-pop, and straight jazz - we'll cover the wide range of the sounds of South Africa. Apartheid-era legends like Miriam Makeba, the Mahotella Queens, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo; political pop pioneers like Juluka; modern superstars like Freshly Ground and Zola; and of course, Hugh Masekela - and more. It's going to be a great show.
Come hang out with Carter and enjoy the indestructible sounds tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on gullar sahir's main stream. Hope to see you there!
