Cello, Violin, Nyckelharpa, Hardingfele. Today's program features bowed strings in both classical and folk styles. As listeners no doubt know, the cello and violin each have four strings played by means of a bow. The nyckelharpa and hardingfele, both about the size of a violin, have additional strings that create resonant tones through sympathetic vibration. The notes on a nyckelharpa are created by pressing keys that act as frets on the strings, which you may hear in some of today's recordings.
