From the Library: A Bach Festival

Today's programme is dedicated to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), with largely traditional, but some contemporary interpretations of the composer's work.

Listeners may find it strange to learn that during his lifetime Bach was thought somewhat old-fashioned and behind the times, as other composers adopted more decorated rococo styles. Today, of course, it's a different matter and there is a vast library of recordings of his work available, a selection of which we will hear during the programme.

In addition to a wide selection of recordings of Bach's music performed as he might have intended, we've also included some modern interpretations, from the electronic realisations of Wendy Carlos to a few jazz-influenced performances for your delectation and pleasure.

Today's programme is presented by Elrik Merlin and produced by gullar sahir in conjunction with the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium of Second Life. You can listen to the programme now at http://loudcity.com/stations/radio-riel/tune_in; outside the US, tune to http://main.radioriel.org in-world, or simply click here if your browser is configured to launch a player automatically.
