This week marks the 3rd anniversary of the original incarnation of Madhu's Cafe, the home of Monday Night World music. And what better way to celebrate than to return to Madhu's Cafe's roots: the music of Bollywood.
"Bollywood" is a catch-all term for the mainstream Hindi-language movie industry centered in Mumbai. The songs from these movies have been part of the heart of Indian popular music for many decades. Tonight's Monday Night World Music explores these diverse and brilliant sounds from the evergreen hits of the 1950s right up to the brand new music of today's movies.
If you've never heard Indian popular music this is a great chance to hear some of the best music in the world. And if you have heard it, you know why I call it that! The ear-catching, foot-tapping music of Bollywood blends traditional Indian sounds with everything from big-band jazz to rock-and-roll - and then some - to create an addictive, uniquely Indian style.
Come hang out with me (Carter) and enjoy the masala tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. Indian dress encouraged but completely optional. You can join us in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on gullar sahir's main stream. Hope to see you there!
